When most people think of Alanta, at some point they think of the homes of the “Old South.” Not necessarily the days of Scarlet and Rhet, but the certainly an elegant time, with parasols, and carriage rides – gas lanterns and verandas.
While it’s not for everybody, there a lots of us that don’t want to live in a home that looks exactly like the one 3 doors down! We like the beauty of Stain Glass Windows, and we don’t mind a little “creak” every now and then!
Kirkwood is an area of Atlanta where you will find many “Classic” bungalows and Victorian Homes. This is a place with sidewalks, and iron fences in the front gardens.
Kirkwood traces its beginnings to residential development begun as early as the 1870s. While no one would consider Kirkwood a suburb of Atlanta today, an early tour book described it as an “area of beautiful suburban villas.”
Kirkwood was an early streetcar suburb to Atlanta. By 1910 streetcars provided express service to and from Atlanta three times daily, and street cars continued service along some streets including Kirkwood Road until the early 1950’s.
For some people looking at homes for sale in Atlanta Ga the one thing that stands out when house hunting is that neighborhood to neighborhood the homes look the same.
A customer who had been looking for homes for several months all over town met me one day and asked, “where are the houses that have some character?” I quickly pointed her toward the area that I live in, Kirkwood, GA. We have great homes, we’re close to shopping, entertainment and jobs… and we have great family events at places like Bessie Branham Park!
If you are looking for a home that goes beyond the traditional subdivision and isn’t part same floor plan from new home neighborhood to neighborhood - you might want to consider looking at the Historic Homes in Kirkwood, GA.
Homes with beautiful wood floors and original pocket doors. Homes with fancy trim and brackets and columns framing front porches that are made for sitting and people watching. Homes that were built with pride by craftsmen, not by a construction crew waiting for the whistle to blow and end the day.
Owning an older home certainly comes with its own challenges. If you can’t stand the thought of a drafty window or can’t live without a double car detached garage, then you might not be happy with a house that is living, breathing, and needs to be loved and maintained.
If, on the other hand, you swoon over transoms, stainglass windows, heavy fireplace mantles in your bedooms and gingerbread trim…a historic property might be just the right place for you to call home.
